I'm in the same boat as you, Molly, but you just admitted it first.

I also think the name suggests handing down to future generations, but when I see something that is "heirloom" it usually is made of batiste and has delicate looking embroidery on it (usually white on white) and tiny lace inserts and pin tucks, etc. I've seen nightgowns, baby things, etc. that were called heirloom.
I know there are heirloom sewists on this board who can give a much better definition, so I'll get out of here!
